Links
Here are some useful links for sites and contacts both inside and outside of NZ for those of you wanting to get the Burlesque look.
What Katie Did is a London store that specialises in faux vintage underwear and accesories. Their seamed stockings are inexpensive and made on original 50s machinery. This site is an absolute must visit. They deliver to New Zealand.
The best place to buy large feather fans is the online store ostrichs.com- almost every Burlesque performer on the planet buys their fans from this site. Again, they deliver to New Zealand but you may want to use the UK version of the site as it is EU policy that GST shouldn't be charged on deliveries to countries outside the EU.
Ann Summers is a UK company specialising in all things naughty and fun. This is a good site to find inexpensive and good quality props and accessories such as pasties and stockings. Again, they deliver to NZ GST free.
For those of you who would like to style your hair in vintage styles such as finger waves or pin curls but either don't know how to do it or have hair that won't behave, visit Wigfx. They are an NZ company who make wigs for stage and screen and for mortals with bad hair like me. I wear their wigs when I perform and they are so good, they look real. And to top it all off, they are very affordable.
Miss Illicit may have closed its doors but for those of you wanting similar style clothes, Brigette Boop Couture is where you'll find 50s style clothing. Brigette can also tailor make whatever you desire. Here is her myspace page where you'll find examples of her designs and her contact details.
Flo Foxworthy is a costume maker in Wellington who has made me some fine sets of pasties and a gorgeous underbust bra.
The best place in Auckland to get a cheap boa is not the $2 shop - they shed feathers everywhere! Get down to Onehunga to Antique Fabric and Lace. They sell boas for $20. They don't shed and they feel a lot more luxurious and genuine than the chicken feathers on string from the $2 shop. And for those of you who like to make your own clothing, the shop is full of awesome accessories and fabric.
If you want to get some pin-up style photos taken just like the one on the left, Miss T Pinups is where you should go. Based in the CBD, they can provide hair and makeup stylist to give you the perfect vintage look and can even provide some costume and props.
Next time you're in Australia, find the nearest Review clothes shop and have a look at their amazing clothes. They do vintage style clothes with a modern twist. You'll find them at Myer department store. While you're in Myer, go to the makeup department and find the Benefit counter. Their makeup line is amazing and the 50s style artwork on their packaging was made for Burlesque followers.
Hopefully, these contacts will help you get the glamour look you're after. If you are a business selling Burlesque related products and would like to be listed here, please contact: misschiefevents@googlemail.com
